COS·TUME (n) 1. A style of dress, including garments, accessories, and hairstyle, especially as characteristic of a particular country, period, or people. 2. An outfit or a disguise worn on Mardi Gras, Halloween, or similar occasions.
“Nothing can tell you more about a shoot than the costumes that the subjects or models are wearing”, my adaptation from an article I’ve read. The theme "Dark Angel" required us an appropriate costume. I'm sure everyone would agree with me that without a wing costume it would be hard to realize the concept.
In the absence of a costume designer I turned to our stylist to source out for a costume. Hazel de Jesus from the Nautical shoot, styled this shoot. She was the one who coordinated to customize the construction of the dark wing costume. After two revisions, we decided on the final design of the wings.
On hair and makeup, we were joined by Gina Si. I've always been wanting to collaborate with her since I've already seen her work from a previous workshop we've organized back in 2008, fortunately she's able to accommodate my request this time.
This shoot wouldn’t be possible if not for Emil, whose wife is a friend of Megan. According to him, his wife suggested the "Dark Angel" theme and Megan got interested as well.
To ensure that we would be able to capture the concept in mind Emil and I made a test shoot days prior. With the help of a mannequin, we've done several lighting setup then we noted the configuration for the actual shoot. We were originally 5 photographers on this shoot but unfortunately during the day of the shoot the others were not able to come.
Again, costume is a key element in order to convey the theme of a photoshoot. It is equally important as hair & makeup and fashion styling. On the photographer side, a technical skill in lighting is a key in achieving the winning shot.
