Fashion Photography Course - Haute Couture

It was around November of 2012 when Star World started airing the very first cycle of Asia’s Next Top Model. Proud Filipina beauty Stephanie Retuya from Laguna made it all the way to the Top 3 out of 14 finalists from various regions across Asia. Since I started going into fashion photography, I’ve always been keen on watching America’s Next Top Model but was not able to catch the airing of the show's adaptation in the region. Little did I know that I would one day get a chance to shoot one of the Top Model hopefuls one day.
The final module of my fashion photography course at Fashion Institute of the Philippines involved shooting haute couture. Our mentor Rxandy invited us to shoot with him during the time he shot for an article in The Philippine Star's YStyle . This where I met Steph and got the chance to shoot her.
Wardrobe and styling were in the creative hands of Ryuji with our styling class partners assisting. On Stephanie; black sequin dress by Tedd Mabitazan, silver necklace by AC+632, gray see-through dress worn as skirt by Miss Selfridge and black round glasses by Apostrophe. On makeup is Sharon of Shu Emura. On hair style is Divad of Mega Fashion Crew 2.
Special thanks to Gregory of Coco's Garden Guest House Manila.
Aside from the beautiful model and good styling, my personal takeaway from this shoot is the lesson I learned from our mentor, “You should always be able to adapt to whatever challenges that get thrown at you on any shooting opportunity”. In this project, Rxandy had us shoot in almost low light conditions without any fancy lighting gear. To add to that, we had to finish very quickly since we were shooting in between his schedule. In response, I used basic strobist technique. I pulled out my trusted Canon 580EX and the remote trigger from my bag for a one-light source setup. Thanks to Vin and Rain who helped hold the flash. Since time is of the essence, I just tried shooting as accurate as possible and hoped for a best shot.
